Steve:

Hello and returning happies and new listeners. This is

Stephen:

Steve Bennet-Martin. And this is Stephen Martin-Bennet. And welcome to a lifetime of. The

Steve:

podcast where we take you on our journey for some of the movies, TV shows, and other bits of pop culture that are helping to keep us happy while hopefully bring a smile to your

Stephen:

face along the way. And today we're finishing off musical may with the Abbott inspired musical about paternity mamma Mia. And we're not alone, are we? No, because this week. We are having a returning guest, Ronald Wilson diamond the second. Hey Ron, a

Ronnie:

hello, everyone. I wish somebody would test my fraternity.

Steve:

That implies that you've been with women.

Stephen:

No, I Goldstar. Yes. But before we get into the movie itself, my darling what's been making you happy. Wow.

Steve:

Well we, we just finished up in season three of black lady sketch show and it was hysterical. I would think my favorite skit from the season was with the devil. Oh,

Stephen:

the devil. Whenever she was ashy ashy, and she was trying to get lotion and the devil was like, you could sell me on a soul. Yes, that was

Steve:

my, that was a highlight for me. What was your favorite sketch of the season? Oh,

Stephen:

so I also really enjoy the. SI SI SI the woman that is the pre PhD. Yeah. And how she was running for president, but the there were a lot of really good ones that just made me smile. That's just, it's a solid show. And it makes me happy every time it comes back. Yes. I know

Steve:

we're not necessarily their target demographic, but we appreciate it and love it

Stephen:

all the same. Absolutely. For me though, we've been watching the show on paramount plus called why women kill? Yes. We'll have

Steve:

finished season one for sure. By the time that this comes out.

Stephen:

Yes. We know you're the reason women kill,

Steve:

but yes, we're on season one and we're eight episodes deep and reaching the climax. And I have no idea how it's going to happen with most of these. We have our theories

Stephen:

and yeah, we're not sure who dies. And Ronnie has done by the same writer as desperate Housewives, Mark Cherry. So, you know, he

Steve:

can write a good mystery.

Ronnie:

Well, I need to see that then. Yeah, I would like that for sure. I love desperate Housewives, particularly in the beginning.

Stephen:

Well, and you would really love this cast because as Lucy, Lou has Lucy, Lou, Jennifer Goodwin, as your snow. Yeah.

Ronnie:

Yeah. She's always pregnant and every damn thing she does seriously.

Stephen:

Once Jennifer Goodwin is not pregnant in this show, she has not.

Steve:

No,

Ronnie:

it's

Stephen:

really, really, really well done. I'm severely impressed with it and I'm excited. Oh, because season two, the lead actress is the evil queen from once upon a time. Oh,

Ronnie:

I love her. I love

Stephen:

her. Yeah. So, so you're going to have to check out paramount plus why women kill? Yes. And black

Steve:

lady sketch show for those listening in the U S at least it's on HBO max. Yes. Now, Ronnie, what's been making you happier. What's new with.

Ronnie:

Well, we've been going through a heat wave in India, although there's always a heat word competitor. You see what I'm of course, but there's also a drought much like in the Southwest and California, they're having droughts here as well. But that, that's not really making me happy. I have to tell you. But related to that is that on Tuesday, Tuesday evening, we rent and I will be departing India for the United States will be home for two weeks. It will be a short trip, all things considered, and it will just be between those sets of parents. But it'll, we're, that's that's that is making me happy and anticipation and it will be making me happy in a few days. So

Stephen:

yeah, like Kentucky and Indiana in late may, early June, there's low humidity. The temperatures are still in the eighties. It's lovely that time in the Midwest.

Steve:

Just once again, we aren't worth the trip for Ronnie to make it down here to Sarasota.

Ronnie:

So no, it is, it is really nice there, but I'm planning to come and visit. I am, it'll be, this is just a quick in and out. So she said. That's what you do.

Stephen:

And you shouldn't come here in the summer. I'm telling you that now, like you need

Ronnie:

in the summer. No, that's when I come, because it gives me an opportunity to maximize my opportunity of complaint. Ah, I'll be there in August all, but I'll be rough August with

Stephen:

bells on. Yeah, we don't go outside at all ghost. Yeah. I

Ronnie:

mean, that's how it is here right now. I mean, it's apparently like the Northeast, isn't a huge heat wave right now, Washington DC. It's 95 degrees, New York, Philadelphia. Everything's 95 already. It's well, above average in Delhi, it's been 113 degrees Fahrenheit. I driver takes me to the gym every morning. I'm there for two or three hours when my trainer now. And then I'm back into the car and picks me up with a fresh cold bottle of water plastic, of course, because it's not really that great. None of that's not true. I'm just joking. And then from there back home, and then I stay inside, play Rick muffler, read a book, or to watch some TV, go back to bed and do it all again.

Steve:

What a lot of life. Yes.

Ronnie:

Well, I did have to fire a couple of maids for drunkenness, but that's neither here nor there

Stephen:

isn't that part in kettle.

Ronnie:

Well, you know, sometimes we have to think of it a little bit differently. Like when the cook sticks his hand in the blue flame of the stove, it's not very good. So I couldn't let him put himself in danger. Now he's on the street starving, but I did what I had to do.

Stephen:

Okay. Now back to the movies,

Steve:

that's my happiness now. Steven, what is this

Stephen:

Abba out? I see what you did there. So according to I IMD DB the story of a bride to be trying to find her real father told using him. Songs made popular by the 1970s group Abba.

Steve:

I think that does a decent job, but what say

Stephen:

you? I say it's Meryl Streep Patsy from AB fab James Bond, Mrs. Weasley, mark Darcy, and other sing the hits of Abba and the midst about a plot of possible fathers in a wedding on a gorgeous Greek island.

Steve:

So it sounds like you care more about the music here than you care about the

Stephen:

plot. Yeah, the music's fantastic. And it's great seeing all these actors that you love from other things, having a blast like this looks like they were having so much fun making the movie. So is that why you love it? Well, the movie itself is joy to watch. Like you're watching it. These are songs, you know, so you're wanting to sing along and Meryl Streep is. Beloved can do no wrong by the gaze. So, and Meryl Streep, singing Abba songs in overalls with like a ponytail. Like this is good times and, you know like I mean, there's other actors and actresses in there, but it's between the actors and the music and the setting. It's gorgeous there. I, I watch it. I'm like, I want to go to Greece.

Steve:

Yes, we can add that to our bucket list. Yeah.

Ronnie:

Yeah. You could add it to mine as well. It's one place I've yet to visit and, and, but it always looks so beautiful and, and everything. Any sort of picture, film, movie, whatever, just have beautiful pandemic knocked all those buckets.

Steve:

Ronnie, you should find the three of us out degrees for podcast research. Oh

Ronnie:

yeah. Well you never know what you never know if I'm feeling, what is it general? So he was spooked. There's no running, but I love her voice. I love her voice and her saying, I wish you'd sing a more often. It's it's a pleasant voice.

Stephen:

You really, really love Abba.

Ronnie:

Absolutely love every song have every song I've listened to every song a hundred thousand times. And I am proud to say that, and you know, their own tour, they have come back, they have resurrected themselves after 40 years, you can visit them now in London, you can see them on their avatar form

Stephen:

now. And also in college, you got me to listen to the Abbott teens.

Ronnie:

Yeah. We used to dance to that too, because it was fun. And don't forget the most important story of all relating to Abba. Remember went back when cars used to have cassette players and we had our cars at school and you know, back then, of course, Monica wouldn't listen to any music unless it was the music of the church, because otherwise we burn in hell fire

Stephen:

forever. So she brought her.

Ronnie:

That's exactly right. But little do people know upon it, but that was one time we were driving out. I think it was to the movies, up to the Morgan town mall or someplace like that. I remember. And we were all in the car together. The three of us that maybe lamb Pearcey was in there too at the time or Amber or somebody was, and. We were driving. And because the cassette of habit that I had was like, you know, cause Ted is not as clear as CD and all this and that, or it was, it was kind of scratchy was old. We had told Monica that it was the Lord's favorite songs. And she couldn't tell that it was the religious music at all. We had her full per month and it was fun. And you'll see, you have a figure that out. She may not even know to this day.

Stephen:

I do remember that she thought dancing, dancing queen was up religious pop

Ronnie:

song. She thought it was for the Lord. She thought it was as the Deere and point of grace and all that other stuff she thought I said here, girl, if you like that one, that you're going to love this one right here called super trooper it's it's for the Lord. It's the Lord's favorite song of all I got out. I got to hear that song.

Stephen:

yeah. Yeah. Come along along

Ronnie:

with me and you'll be saved. Yup.

Stephen:

So now that we've last famed Monico, I'm going to show good thing.

Steve:

She doesn't listen.

Ronnie:

She's she's busy with those babies.

Steve:

Yes, yes. Yeah. The movie itself. Yep. Mama. Me and the movie was released by universal pictures on July 10th, 2008, with a budget of 52 million and received a whooping box office of 611.3 million

Stephen:

in December of 2008. It beat Titanic as the highest grossing movie of all time in the United Kingdom, which like Titanic was a juggernaut of a film. And to think that the Meryl Streep musical about a seventies pop group beat out Titanic is fantastic. But then the following year avatar beat it. That's two bitches, but that's, I think that's just amazing that this film did so well over there. Yep.

Steve:

And the movies directed by a full Lydia Lloyd and written by Catherine Johnson based on our book from the 1999 musical of the same name.

Stephen:

Yup. And Lloyd later went on to direct to the iron lady and herself, and the film has an ensemble cast. So it has Meryl Streep. The gays know her from the devil, wears Prada as Donna,

Steve:

Amanda Seyfried from mean girls as Sophie,

Stephen:

Christine Baranski from Chicago and many other

Steve:

how do you know Christine Baranski? What's your favorite role? You know,

Ronnie:

back in the 1890, she and I used to have lunch at the hotel Metropol

Stephen:

so he wants it. He watches her on the gilded

Steve:

age. Yes. And she plays Tanya here,

Stephen:

Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, double oh seven in golden eye as Sam Dominick

Steve:

Cooper who plays Howard stark in the MCU flashbacks as Scott,

Stephen:

Colin Firth as mark Darcy in Bridget Jones diary is Harry,

Steve:

Stellan Skarsgard who played professor Selvig in Thor and in the MCU

Stephen:

as bill and Julie Walters, the incomparable Mrs. Weasley in the Harry Potter franchise as rosy.

Steve:

Yes. Fat, fat, fat, fat. Yeah. As we mentioned, it was a musical before it was a movie. It was composed by Benny Anderson and Jorn old Vegas, two members of Abba and was written by Catherine, John. Premiering on April 6th, 1999 at the prince Edward theater in London,

Stephen:

since then over 65 million people have seen the show and it has grossed over$4 billion worldwide since its debut. Yeah. And the

Steve:

shows west end productions are still ongoing making it at least the sixth longest running show in history. As of this recording, while it closed on Broadway in two, these 2015, after a 14 year run making it the ninth longest running show on Broadway as of this

Stephen:

recording. So I got to see the show when it was doing pre-production in Washington, DC before it went to Broadway, you know, where they do the Allentown trials. And it's interesting in the stage version, the character of Tanya that Christine Brandscape plays is really, really. Really a Patsy from AB fab knockoff completely. Like they even have her in one of the Patsies like iconic white outfits at one point too. Wow.

Steve:

Yeah. So how does the movie start off? My love? So it's

Ronnie:

in

Stephen:

Cincinnati. You and I did. Yes.

Ronnie:

And didn't we say it was my mom's sister, my, my aunt Joyce, Annie.

Stephen:

Oh goodness. You know, I think we

Ronnie:

might, maybe I thought we did, or maybe that was Damon. I forget blur have another cocktail woman. Okay. Christine Baranski called. I got a gut.

Stephen:

No, the movie starts off with 20 year old Sophie Sheridan who lives with her mother, Donna on the small Greek island of Kalahari, where Donna runs a hotel called Villa. Donna Sophie is planning to marry her fiance sky and once her father to be present, to give her away. Unfortunately, she doesn't know who he is after reading Donna's diary from 20 years ago, she concludes that he's one of three men, Sam Carmichael, Harry Bright, or bill Anderson, and without telling her mother or her fiance, Sophie mails, invitations to all three, pretending that they're coming from her mother. And that's done during the, I have a dream song with hopes to find out which one is her father it's, you know, already you're like girl.

Steve:

Yes. Sophie tells her two best friends, Allie and Lisa about her, the, her potential fathers while she sings, honey, honey, as all three men make their way to the island thinking Donna asked them to come. And with this being discovered through a journal or a diary, did you ever keep one.

Stephen:

I tried, but I got bored of doing it and I would forget to keep updating it. Same.

Steve:

I think like my longest journal had like four or five entries before I was like, this is not for me. What about you, Ronnie?

Ronnie:

Well, I had to burn the evidence. There were tomes and volumes full all my excavators.

Stephen:

I do remember that, that might've been in the list of if I ever die before you call my parents to let them know that I'm dead, go over to my apartment and get rid of this, this, this,

Steve:

this, and this.

Ronnie:

That's true because remember I said the same thing for you, except I'd be, I'd be happy to walk up that pamphlet you had.

Steve:

Yeah. And I would say the closest thing I had to that just came to mind was in high school and junior high, when I would pass notes with friends, I would keep the notes and I would squirrel them away and like a little hole in my class. For blackmail, no justice so that I can, like, I don't at the time I was like, it was so I can kind of like look back and be like, look at what we said, like, and like reflect on it. And that was the closest thing where I was like, you know, if my parents read those, it would have been even jucier than a diary. But I can say, I can

Ronnie:

say it, picture it now, Steve

Steve:

hiding in his closet, squirreling notes away literally, and figured it out. Where are you

Ronnie:

where you date me? Yes, no. Or maybe circle, watch time for reflection every wallet.

Stephen:

Now the, whenever they're singing the song and talking about it when Donna's writing in her diary, she uses the, she uses ellipses, you know, dot, dot, dot in reference here, then saying fucking yeah. In reference to sex. And I think that that's interesting because. She's not writing it for anybody else. She's writing it for herself. So she was very for being as cares, carefree and things. Back then, she was very modest in her own writing to be like, and then we.dot, dot,

Steve:

like it seem other Martin doing the same thing. If she was writing like some sort of details of how you were conceived. I don't think she would write out on words what she did. She would just say.dot, dot

Ronnie:

mother, mountains journals from her gate. She allowed me to do it. Of course, I had full permission. I just saw a bunch of sad faces where those dots were supposed to be primarily after Barry had already been born.

Steve:

okay. He doesn't listen either. So

Ronnie:

she's singing with my naked.

Stephen:

Sophie feels that something's missing from her life and when she meets her father, everything will fall into place. What are your thoughts on her way of that type of thinking? Do you think that like that's a legitimate way of thinking or is she just looking for a band-aid?

Steve:

Well, I mean, I have trouble, like I can kind of relate and kind of not relate. Cause while I grew up with a mother and a father, I was adopted and didn't know my birth parents. And because I think I grew up knowing, and it was always just like a matter of fact, it was never like revealed to me. I didn't like find it in some secret document in the garage. Like I always just grew up knowing I was adopted. I never really felt like anything was missing because my parents would be like, we want actually wanted you unlike some of your friends who were accidents. And so, you know, I feel like she's kind of just building it up because she's probably dreamed of it her entire life growing up without any sort of father figure. But I don't think that meeting him would make everything fall into place. I mean, that's building up so many high expectations that no. Could live up to them. What about you, Ronnie?

Ronnie:

I mean, I absolutely agree with that. Totally, totally. I mean, but I can see, she wants to know, but I mean, so I don't think I know I, and I know I'm not adopted, so I can't say that I don't have these feelings naturally, but I have to say when I don't think people put enough value on this is I'm not going anywhere with this, but I'm just thinking of people put enough value or they don't spend enough time thinking about, yeah, you were chosen, you were actually wanted unlike those other people. And so I think we all know some of those other people, but I, I don't think people say that my cousins, I have so many cousins who are adopted and no one ever thought anything differently about it, but I can understand, wanting to know, but it it's that part in real life. I think it's that person's choice

Steve:

now Donna's gone do what they want. Yeah. Donna's longtime friends and former bandmates from Donna and the. Single fun-loving cookbook writer, Rosie and rich three time divorce, say Tonya arrive on the ferry boat. Meanwhile, the men are on road together on Bill's

Stephen:

boat and the movie's friendships are broken down into three trios. You've got Sophie and her two friends Donna and Tanya and Rosie, and the three men who form a bond rather quickly over the course of the film. Now

Steve:

too, we're part of a trio that we talk about all the time we're in

Stephen:

Shia. Yeah. Like Ronnie and Monica and I were definitely a trio and we still

Steve:

are. Yeah. And growing up, I would say I was always Steve, Dennis and drew through like middle school, grade school and high school. And then afterwards it kind of just became like the Laura and Steve show, or we were more of a duo than a trio, but I definitely remember growing up as it was always like one of three boys. Yeah.

Ronnie:

I sleep with Dennis. No,

Stephen:

he wasn't that different Dennis and no, you didn't get,

Ronnie:

I want to probably, okay. That's enough to know.

Stephen:

All right. Now, fun fact Cher was offered the role of Tanya Wilkinson in this movie, but declined due to her tour commitments. Although she later signed on to be Ruby Sheridan in the cul mama Mia. Here we go again. Yes.

Steve:

Now, while Donna is making repairs to the hotel, she can't afford, she sings money, money, money, and there's a tremor and the dolphin mosaic and the courtyard floor

Stephen:

splits. And it's, it's one of those things where, you know, she has always tried to be so independent and do everything and there's repairs. She needs to be. So that she can get customers, but she needs customers to have money to make the repairs. And so it's that whole vicious cycle that you need one to get the other, to get the other. Yeah.

Steve:

And sky has this whole plan for online marketing of just the fact that no one knows about the Villa is why it's not being successful. What do you think of his plan of just like a really good website and online listing would solve all their problems? Oh,

Stephen:

I think it would solve a lot of the problems because it's one of those, especially then, if you didn't like how many people are going to know that there's a tiny island off the coast of Greece where you can go and have a fantastic time. With Meryl Streep and like in, unless there's a website. So I think they definitely need more advertising. I was going to say, what'd you go

Steve:

vacation at Aphrodite spa? The hotel was renovated

Stephen:

in a heartbeat. Yes.

Steve:

Well,

Ronnie:

I'm glad to hear it because I'll be opening up my bathroom next week. Y'all can come and play it, but you know what, here's the other thing. This is a little short blip of it, but we realized too, that that ferry that goes from the mainland to the island, you only go once every three or four days. So if you have a ferry that only goes there every three or four days, because remember if the guys missed it, they would've had to wait until Monday to get there. So you got to do something if your fairies only

Stephen:

I think it's one of those. If, if there was more traffic that they would have the ferry go more often And now if you opened up a spa over there in India, like I very much enjoyed the best exotic Marigold hotel movies. So I would definitely come to stay at that hotel first shore.

Ronnie:

And we'll be, we'll be, we'll be increasing the amount of stars that come along because I'm not staying in the goat house.

Steve:

I'm speaking of the goat house, the men arrive at the hotel. And so if he hides them upstairs in the old goat house, getting them to agree, not to reveal that she wrote them pretending to be your mother, Donna, Donna hunts for flooring supplies in the goat house, here's noises upstairs and peaks inside the trap door and window recognizing them. And she dated, she panics, but tries to take another peek at them while she sings. Mama Mia, you can see a little bit of what that is while spicing. I mean, listening to it here. Oh,

Stephen:

you might go again. She finally climbs onto the rooftop and then falls through the trap door that was opened by a member of the Greek chorus who Don and the other characters can't see, which is interesting because there are times where the green chorus are people that work at the hotel or live on Kalahari. And then other times where they're functioning as the Greek chorus in the songs and they're invisible, and this was one of those times where they were all on the roof with her and she did not see them. Yeah. Yes.

Steve:

Now I know I'm going to regret asking Ronnie this question, but back when you were single, how would you respond to finding three ex lovers, all waiting to reunite with you at the same time?

Ronnie:

I was surprised that would've only been three, the likelihood would have been that it would have been in the hundreds of non-injured the thousands, especially at that age. Wait, what year is this? I mean, nobody even knows. I don't even start out. What do they call it in the movie? Serendipity, you know, when fate is funny, that's what you got now. I mean, I would, I'd actually probably be pretty cool about it. I could probably go with the flyer there. In fact, I could probably go in many directions about that album.

Stephen:

Yeah. Only, only if I get to pick the three X lovers of

Ronnie:

north. No, no, absolutely not. I know what you will pick. You can't pick it and you can't say it down. Know now you'll pick, you'll pick the lowest common denominator. That's what you'll pick on. Are you,

Stephen:

you mean the one that we gave the capillary lessons.

Ronnie:

Oh, I'm sorry. But he, he had to have vocabulary lists. He needed them. He didn't understand. He couldn't even read the first page of in the garden and midnight in the garden of good and evil. He couldn't even read the first damn a page. So I had to give him vocabulary words to improve himself. Isn't that what I try to do to help people elevate yourself, be the best that you can be. Well, some people still choose to be the lowest common denominator. Not can't

Stephen:

help. Maybe you shouldn't date below your level.

Steve:

I'm sure he can let it check cleared.

Ronnie:

I didn't once the check. Well, I can tell you all the others, Hey, Hey, that's another side of that corn that you all don't know about, but I guess you can tell now,

Steve:

so

Stephen:

it would depend on sure. The

Ronnie:

checks cleared, make sure the checks cleared. That's how you respond.

Stephen:

It would depend on what three they were. There are actually, there's probably only one X that I like everybody else I'm pretty good with. Or is the only one that'd be like, you can leave. Yeah.

Steve:

Surprise of all surprises. I used to be a bit messy and my relationships didn't really end. So that, that would be a nightmare for me. Yeah. Now Donna, unable to handle the memories, ask the Freeman to leave the islands. So they simply stay at the Harbor on Bill's boat. Seeing the three minute have sent on into shocker, two friends, Tonya and Rosie tried to reassure her sing Chiquita, Chica, Tita, whatever bananas. These three people clearly have a deep for

Stephen:

bond. Yeah. And it's amazing. Like you can see the test of a true friendship that it's been years since they've seen each. But no time has passed. And that's where you can really tell about friendships that are going to last a lifetime that time can pass before you see or talk to them and you can come right back to it. Like no time has passed at all. And I love that with these three. Now,

Ronnie:

unlike you, the swamps and the Everglades, just to try to get away from my flight arrivals. I look, who's

Steve:

talking Mr. I'm in India, blue across the world. Now, Ronnie, do you want to go first in assigning and who in your trio was more like Donna, Tonya and Rosie?

Ronnie:

Yeah, with him. Shall I began? Well,

Stephen:

just go for it. It won't take long.

Ronnie:

Well, I'm going to have to be Christine Baranski,

Steve:

obviously.

Ronnie:

I have to be Tanya that leaves Monica and Steve and Mero. Steve can be Meryl Streep. He would be good to not, I think it could be make, it can be that other one that'll wet nurse that comes in and does whatever she's supposed to do and leaves.

Stephen:

Honestly, that's how I did it. I was Donna, you were Tonya. Monica was rosy.

Ronnie:

We got a wet nurse, Harry Potter's wet nurse or whatever that

Steve:

Donna explains. The three potential fathers are on the island and comments. It's like a hideous trick of fate when some bystanders instantly laugh, Tonya and Rosie ponder the quiet bystanders in Rosie mutters. It's very Greek, Tonya and rosy. Look at the Greeks, then follow Donna into the house.

Stephen:

And it's fantastic because it's one of those times where are. Fulfilling their role as the people that are there and the Greek chorus at the same time, because it's kinda like, you know, fate is laughing at them and it, the movie is a little deeper than people give it credit for. And there's a great Greek movie where there were the line is something like how can you play on life?

Ronnie:

I'm pouring a drink if you hear a noise.

Steve:

Sorry.

Stephen:

Yeah. And you know, like you, you try to plan life and fate will laugh at you. And I think that's kind of like what's going on here. Yep. And

Steve:

as Donna continues to spiral Tonya and rosy reminder of her free spirited past, while singing, dancing where she was full of self-confidence and she rebounds and they all sing together dancing through the streets.

Stephen:

Yes,

Steve:

I hit

Ronnie:

my note. I hit my nurse was like Merrill. Did I get my note?

Stephen:

And it's like a siren song for the women on the island who kind of throw off the shackles of their daily lives, if, just for a moment to feel that spark of happiness and joy. And they all dance down to the Harbor pier, where we get a cameo by former Abba member, Benny Anderson playing the piano in the scene and this whole scene where they're dancing through the streets and heading down to the. You can't help, but smile. Yeah.

Steve:

And you love the ending, especially right. With Meryl Streep, Julian Cannonball.

Stephen:

Yeah. I mean, obviously like it's Meryl Streep doing a Cannonball. That's just like, oh, it's the best

Steve:

it is. Now as the song climaxes, we see a massive dance mob of all the women in town. Do you have any experience with dance mobs? Yes, I

Stephen:

did. Several flash mobs in Cincinnati. As part of my big gay wedding show, we did one over by Newport on the levy and to advertise it. And then we also did one during gay pride as the halftime show for the gay pride festivity. So I love like hold dancing things like even when I'm at the gym and I've got music in my ears and. Not right now, obviously, but like in the past and I would be listening. Yeah. I'd be listening to music and it's almost like why aren't people dancing around the machines? Like you do not hear the fun song in my head. Everybody should have a choreograph number right now.

Steve:

Yes. Now Sophie visits.

Ronnie:

I agree with the, I agree with, I'm sorry. I have to just say I agree with that. And I'm just like, well, you know, I'm playing with you about the gym, but if you listen to music like this, when you are like, just, and you know, I, I hate the gym. I heard it. All these people get endorphins. They feel good about it, but I don't, I'm not one of them. I don't do it. I don't like it. I do it as a chore and I hate it. I hate every damn minute of it. That being said, if you do play fun, field music like this, it makes a huge difference. And it does fly by

Stephen:

a hundred

Steve:

percent fully for that. Now Sophie visits the three men on Bill's boat and convinces them to stay for her wedding. After hearing all three men's memories of Donna as they sing our last summer.

Stephen:

And I, my favorite part is this is how each of them are sharing a skill was Sophie that they had also shared with her mother, like Sam and his drawing bill and his music hair or Harry and his music bill and his sailing. And, you know, it's, even though this is one afternoon, it's that bonding that she missed out on with all

Steve:

of them. Yeah. And looking back in the past, who do you think she had the most chemistry with back then?

Stephen:

Oh yeah. I mean, it was clearly Sam, even when she's telling the story, the only reason that Harry and bill happened is because she was so hurt by what happened with Sam.

Steve:

Agreed now when that's why

Ronnie:

he got, and he, that's why he got all the songs.

Steve:

Yes. Now when Sophie hears sky, she jumps into the sea and swims to him on the beach sky is annoyed with Sophie's disappearance and doesn't understand her need to find her father saying she already has a family putting it all aside for a moment. They discuss their meeting and their love for each other. As they sing, lay all your love on me while sky is ambushed by his buddies for his bachelor party.

Stephen:

Sounds to me, it's a great scene, especially when the guys all have their. You know, swimming fans on and they're dancing on the pier. Yeah.

Ronnie:

And that is, that is a lifetime of happiness. That scene, right there is perfect mirrored reflection of this. I love it. I love it all afternoon. Cause I rewatched it today and just

Steve:

laughed the whole after. And you were saying that in the Broadway show, they actually are in like bright neon

Stephen:

colors. Yeah. And that, and they turn on black lights so that all the dancers are, are glowing and it just even like the song is already enjoyable, but then you've got all these guys up there and they're glowing as they're doing the dance and it's so much

Steve:

fun. Yeah. And it made me think, you know, that the song being all about how they fell in love with each other. How did you know when I was the one Stephen?

Stephen:

So,

Ronnie:

well, I can tell know.

Stephen:

Honestly, I think it was,

Steve:

I'm not

Stephen:

sure now I honestly think it was for my birthday that first year and in my birthday card you had taped all the movie stubs, the, of the movies we had gone to, and it was like nobody had ever taken the time to care that much about the memories that were being made to memorialize them that way. And that's when I knew that you were special and different than anybody else I'd ever.

Steve:

I do good. I would say I kind of knew during our Fort Lauderdale trip, because we were able to travel together and have a great time without any sort of fights or drama. And I was like, I think

Ronnie:

this is really sweet. Yeah. When did you, when did you make this

Steve:

stuff? When did you know Brent was the one Ronnie?

Ronnie:

Well, when the check cleared of Kohl's

Steve:

and we're back now that evening, the three women at a Hindu party

Stephen:

re not a Hindu, a hidden party. I know, but

Steve:

don't, they call them Hindus in Britain. We learned that from my dad wrote a porno, oh, well, we could make one. So that the hen party, they recreate their old eighties style and musical trio, Donna and the dynamos as they sing super trooper, which is one of Ronnie's favorite songs. We'll play a little clip here.

Ronnie:

this true.

Stephen:

That's such a fun song. And the men show up to the party and the crowd separates and they're singing and dancing. Gimme, gimme, gimme a man after midnight, which is so funny. Yeah. And Donna runs off because she's still not ready to see Sam or speak with him. And Sam takes that opportunity to talk to Sophie saying that she shouldn't be stuck on the island, that she needs to get out and pursue her art. And in that conversation, Sam starts to put the pieces together.

Steve:

Yes, he certainly does. And

Stephen:

Sophie's in then talking to bill and she mentions that she's named after a woman on the mainland named Sophia, who gave Donna the money for the hotel. And bill was like, oh, I heard that money went to family. And he's like, oh shit. And now he's realizing he could be the father. And she is like, oh, I think you're right. And so she's like, would you give me away?

Steve:

Yep. And right around that time, the mass skies from sky's bachelor party, that's masked with a K. Although they are all a mask as well, invade the hen party in a wild dance sing ULI

Stephen:

VU in, in the commotion. The other two men also conclude that they could be the father and separately each tell Sophie that they'll be the one to give her away at the wedding and surrounded by her mother, her fiance, all three potential. It's all too much and everybody's swirling and she

Steve:

thinks, yes. Now at this point in the movie, we finally got a chance to see how she interacts with each of them individually. When they're alone, who do you think would be the best father to Sophie at this stage in her life?

Stephen:

Oh, what am I, what do you think? Ronnie,

Ronnie:

Colin Firth. Definitely Harry Harry. Cause he can write a check and he's a gay dad. It's going to be

Stephen:

good. And like, I kind of see that and I think that it's peers

Ronnie:

so compares and how can the Swedish father, which by the way, we never said his boat has a Swedish flag on it, which I think is a nod to the fact that he has a Swede. Yes.

Stephen:

Yeah, exactly. And now one of the things like this scene in of itself, Boulay who was a great song and the choreography for this. Is phenomenal with all the backup background performers. It it's one of my favorite scenes in the movie, just for the singing and dancing. Like the choreography is so tight and on point and it, yeah, it's really picking up on the ecstatic nature of the song and it's all building up as her emotions are building up to that climax of her passing out. And I think that this scene in in and of itself is just done so extraordinarily well. And I wanted to highlight that. Yeah. Now

Steve:

we all know that she ends up at Sam, but who would you think would be the best fit for Donna today? If it wasn't for that long lost love?

Stephen:

I, I still think it would, well, obviously not Harry he's getting. Yeah. And bill is that best friend type of energy. Like he would be the one that'd be like, you're having a bad day. We're going skydiving. Yep. And no, Sam, like you can see throughout the whole movie, he's the one it's

Ronnie:

needled it, they needle it, but it's very, very slightly that they need. And I mean, I mean, you don't want him to be the one, if you're someone who really gets off on being Seren or on

Steve:

her,

Stephen:

what are you saying? That Pierce Crossman's voice isn't melodic and wonderful. Won't

Steve:

get the

Ronnie:

garbage disposal melodic and

Steve:

wonderful. We'll get there in just a moment, but yeah, I'm sorry. I have to say what I feel. Go for it. Ronnie. You never, he never, yeah. Now the next morning, Rosie's off to talk to bill and Tanya will talk to Harry, giving them time to interrogate each other so they can figure out who is the actual file.

Stephen:

Now a funny scene are on the boat. Hereon, biller. And neither one will say out loud that from the night before that they're talking about Sophie. So Harry thinks bill is talking about rosy bill things. Harry is talking about coming out and he's like, you just realized you were gay and Rosie is spying on the whole thing. And then we get to see Stellan Skarsgard. But yes, which

Steve:

actually was as his idea when he was wearing the apron, the director didn't know he'd be naked under the apron or have put on those fake butt tattoos, but they loved it so much. They kept it.

Stephen:

Yeah, it seems very on brand for the.

Steve:

Yes.

Ronnie:

And, and, you know, in real life, he's the father of that beautiful vampire from true blood and Eric Northman

Stephen:

and they're all family. Yeah. His other son is Pennywise from the movie. So less

Steve:

sexy there, babe. Well, yeah, I mean,

Ronnie:

yeah. Normally the scar has got her PR

Stephen:

or hot bill Skarsgard was also the hot vampire sun defunct kid Janssen, and that Netflix show now

Steve:

to avoid contention between the lover. Yep. Sophie instead ask Donna to give her away, but they have a spot where Sophie expresses her frustration over not knowing who her.

Stephen:

And while talking to Sam, Donna, making more repairs attempts to seal the crack in the central courtyard, dolphin, mosaic, but the caulking nozzle spills forwarding her efforts for the day. And Donna must rush to other preparations and salmon Dawn. I've tried to talk to each other, but disagree over Sophie's desires for the future. And they're each, you know, concealing their own feelings and their love and each laments their feelings for each other separately and not to each other during the song SOS.

Steve:

Yes. And before we get into the song itself, do you F do you agree with Sam, that Sophie staying on the island for her mom, or do you think that ultimately that island is where her life belongs?

Stephen:

I think at that point in her life, she is staying for her mother because she sees how hard it is. And it's not that Donna has put it upon her that I need you to be here and I need you to stay. Sophie and her mom have always been a team of two because of no father present and they've always relied on each other. So she knows how hard Donna has worked to raise her and be a good mom for. And so Sophie's just trying to pay that back, I think.

Steve:

Yeah. Now as Ronnie hinted Pearson might not be the world's best singer. However, he also had no idea what the project was about, or that would be a musical only being told that Meryl Streep would be starring and they'd be filming in Greece. He stated he would have signed on for anything involving street, describing her as that gorgeous blonde. I fancy terribly in drama school, which I love that. Like he was like, I don't care what the movie is. I don't care what I have to do. I just want to start.

Ronnie:

But they should have tested him at least to have some, you know, even Juliet and you know, Julie Andrews to this day, she no longer sings because many years ago, this is Mary Poppins. For those who don't know, Julie Andrews no longer, like she doesn't have full range. Like she used to, she has about seven or eight really good nights. But when you used to have octaves beyond compare, it's quite different. So she no longer does things in public. And even she doesn't sing in public. And that's what still having one good octave. He didn't even have two or three narratives. That's a problem. That's a problem. And think, yeah, there are, there

are

Steve:

a couple of times

Ronnie:

before Julie Andrews would have to sit here and listen to this being British as well. That's a problem in my background for her, but I

cannot

Stephen:

approve. There are a couple of times in the movie where I'm like, oh, you hit that note. Good job. And there are other times, and it's especially. For me the

Ronnie:

lungs. It's cringe-worthy

Stephen:

the last song at the reception. Yeah. It's hard that one's, that, one's the one that hurts me the most. Yes. But you

Steve:

can get his emotions in a song and how he's still drawn to Donna feeling it in his heart and his soul. And we see Donna finally getting over now,

Stephen:

Don is finally getting over her anger and remembering her fond feelings for him.

Steve:

Yes. And Harry then arrives at the hotel and feeling guilty about missing Soviet childhood gives done a sizable check to cover the cost of the wedding. And probably before she can give it back.

Stephen:

Yeah. And meanwhile, Tonya rejects the playful advances of pepper, the bartender, and some of sky's other friends during does your mother know. And I love that she's from that instead of being a willing Cougar, she's like a year too young and you can't handle that.

Steve:

Yes. And I love that it's because they can handle it. But not that because she was

Stephen:

too old. Yeah. She was like, no, you're too young. Not not that I think that it's too bad is I'm too much of a woman for you. It's

Steve:

not, it's not, I'm too old. It's, you're too young. And here, here, here, after confessing to sky that she has invited all three potential fathers sky says he's unsure of what he wants to do about the wedding. He's hurt that she kept it all from him, lying to him. And he reminds her that being whole doesn't come from finding your father. It comes from finding yourself.

Stephen:

Now, do you agree with sky that Sophie doesn't need to find her father? And is he upset? Is he right to be upset about her?

Steve:

I'd say yes to both. I mean, and also the thing that would frustrate me the most was a wedding is supposed to be about the two people getting their. Not about paternity. So if she wanted to go find her father, she could have gone, done her own thing, had her own movie that didn't involve a wedding. But the fact that she turned their wedding into being about her and her father rather than about her and her fiance, I feel is where the most hurt comes from that. If she had done this months before they were engaged, or if, you know, they were just traveling and decided to make pit stops or whatever, like it would have been different, but it's the fact that she made the wedding about her and her search for paternity rather than about what it should be, which is about getting ready to marry the love of your life. Exactly. So I, I,

Ronnie:

100% unequivocally agree with Steve on this one. It was, she's making it about that and not about them. That being said. Let's be real, most straight boys in the world. Couldn't give a Fiddler's F you, you know, what about the wedding other than whether or not there's beer, wine, and alcohol or whatever else they're doing. That's what straight boys want to have. That's what they want to see. That's what they want to do. They want to know about the bachelors party. They don't care. Usually it's about the family and the girl, but, but that's a straight wedding. So, I mean, I agree with Steve on this. I agree, dear. I agree with you 100%. They, I mean, she made it about that and it's not what it should

Steve:

be about. Yeah. I mean, how would you feel if the day before our wedding Steven, I was like, and I have three potential birth parents and they're all coming to the wedding and I'm so excited about the state because I get to meet my bio. And you know what I want to just get

Ronnie:

down the interview. I would've, I would've begun the interview process on behalf of you and taking over,

Stephen:

I would have said hopefully they're not coming to the reception because I've already turned in the full guest list and we're full. So whatever thing you're planning can happen somewhere else. Not at all. And the thing that I, your

Ronnie:

wedding was, but your wedding was full boys. Your wedding was fooled. We could not have any more people. It was fabulous and beautiful, even though I'm a naked hell or glug, an old swamp creature crawled out, but look GERD because of that storm that came through and that humidity, I told her to lose her hair and do ringlets took a once again, she, my like Brent refused to listen to me and therefore they end up the fool. That being said, that was a flawless wedding and we could not have fit any more people. And then we had, but it was perfect. Yes. I have to say what I fit. I have to say what I

Stephen:

feel. Yes. And the thing that I think sky hit on the most, and I think anybody that's ever gone on a spiritual journey, the, the part of coming home is definitely finding yourself like that. Like, you can see that sky whenever he was traveling the world, that was him. Working on finding himself. And he stopped there because of Sophie and, you know, he has every right to be upset here.

Steve:

Yes. Now Sophie rushes up to Donna and ask her if she'll help her prepare for the wedding. And Donna agrees while preparing, they both reminisce about the times before being engaged while Meryl Streep sings, slipping through my fingers and Steven presses, the festival power button. Yeah,

Ronnie:

it's too hard. It's

Steve:

too

Stephen:

harsh. I fast forward through that scene.

Ronnie:

Every time it hurts too much. I can't do it. It makes me, I can't do that. It's once I did it once. And once it's quite

Steve:

enough. Yeah. Yes. Now Donna's still unaware of Sam's true feelings rushes to the Hilltop wedding and tell Sam that she wants the past to be the past and move on. She's willing to take the loss, admitting her hurt back then and continue to hurt, but she wants to heal and wish him. Well. She finally admits that she still has feelings, but knows nothing can come of it as she sings. The winner takes. Then Donna runs to the Hilltop, leaving Sam stunned.

Stephen:

See, now this is one of my favorite Meryl street performances in the movie as well, because the, the raw emotion that she sings with it. And it's something that I think anybody that has ever broken up with someone and still hasn't dealt, dealt with the feelings or moved on, can identify with and you know, like right here, she's really, she's wanting to say, I want to be a bigger person. I want you to be happy. Like, it may not make me happy, but I do want that for you. And just the way she sings it and, oh, it's so good.

Steve:

Yeah. And she recorded those vocals in one take,

Ronnie:

I didn't know that Reed rarely, really she did. Oh, you know what? And she has a beautiful voice. I know I said it before, but it's not just beautiful. It's pleasant. It's enjoyable. Meryl Streep. I'm sorry. But you know, she just really can't and will never do any wrong. I don't care what she does. I'll never, ever criticize that woman.

Stephen:

No. During the wedding ceremony, Donna finally mentions the father issue and secrets begun unraveling that like Harry is gay or Sam reveals that he left on it to go back to England to break off his engagement. And when he returned, she had already moved on with Harry and bill. And so he went back and got married to his old fiance divorced, but he's now divorced and meanwhile, all three potential fathers publicly claim that they want to be Sophie's father and they agree that they would rather have a third of Sophie than none at all.

Steve:

Yes. Now. With the secret. I'll

Ronnie:

say that about other people's livers. I'd rather have a third of your liver than none at

Steve:

all. Yes. Now remember that with all three being like potential fathers, if only there was a scientific way to determine paternity. Mm. I don't want them

Stephen:

to, I like, I love the idea that each of them loves her and they would rather never know. And in their heart share a piece of her that Harry will be like, she's my daughter. And Bill's like, yep. She's your daughter. And she's my daughter. And Sam's like, yep. She's both of your daughters. And she's my daughter. Like, I love that. I don't want any of them to ever, ever know which one is the real dad. Yeah. That would make me sad for the other two.

Steve:

Yeah. Now Sophia,

Ronnie:

and it brings up the question of inheritance. You really want Harry to be your father in this scenario? Well, all

Stephen:

three men are welfare. All three men are wealthy. They just present

Steve:

themselves different,

Stephen:

right? Bill? Yeah. Yeah. Don't have enough

Ronnie:

money. You'll have to share it. Sam's you'll have to share it with those other children, those offspring he had with that woman, Lorraine. So you definitely want

Stephen:

her, you know, with this though, that she's now in the will for three fathers. That

Steve:

is the best test.

Ronnie:

Well, that comforts me more. I'm I'm I'm content with that

Stephen:

as long as you're good. Yes.

Steve:

Thank you. My dude.

Ronnie:

Now I'm sued. You have Sue's mind.

Steve:

Yes. And Sophie and sky decided to postpone the wedding as sky wanted to all along and they decided to take a trip around the world together. And do you agree that they shouldn't have gotten married right away?

Stephen:

I exactly, I think.

Ronnie:

There. Yeah. Cause they're 20 years old. No. 20 year old to

Stephen:

get married. Well, I think that's true, but also I think they also need to heal from Sophie's deceptions as well, because like, yeah,

Steve:

if they got married after that should show the wedding still wouldn't have been about him and her.

Stephen:

Right. It like they, at some point we'll get married because I do think that they're meant for each other, but right. Then not enough healing had taken place and I'm sure he was still harboring feelings and she was probably starting to feel a lot of guilt. So it was not the time for them to get married. Yeah.

Steve:

And so instead Sandberg closest to Donna arguing. If they marry right away, the wedding party is not wasted. Donna agrees to marry Sam as they sing. I do. I do. I do. I do. I do.

Stephen:

And I do love that. And. The c'mon share, then, you know, you have to have somebody to boss around this island. And I was, and it's right there. You're also like, well, he does 100% get her.

Steve:

Yes. And then they celebrate with their new found family and friends as they sing, when all is said and done

Stephen:

kill me like that one is the most painful of his songs. Like, like, but I have to admit the reception itself is stunning. It's

Ronnie:

certainly.

Steve:

And during that reception, Rosie reveal, she's strongly attracted to bill seeking to take a chance on her. And we hear that.

Stephen:

and of course he doesn't reciprocate at first, but as the song goes on and he doesn't just give in, he also is like, you know what? She's right. And I, 100% buy them as a couple because neither one needs the other one. They have lived, they've lived a life where they are content on their own, which I always say, like, you shouldn't be part of a week until you're fine as a me. And they're both good as individual. And so this works, I don't think it's the movie going. We need everybody to be happy because Tanya turned down the bartender. I think if she had gotten with the bartender would have been tying it up.

Ronnie:

So yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And that was a mistake as well, because I have to say, I paused the movie when that, when that handsome young man and was coming out of the water onto that and whatever he was crawling up on out of. And then I paused and she missed out. That's all I'm saying, well,

Steve:

he's too young for your,

Ronnie:

I had to say, well, now he's not, this is filmed in 2007 and eight. He's older than me.

Steve:

Yes. Now as the crowd dances in the courtyard, the central dolphin, mosaic breaks open in a tremor and the tall spray reigns over the party, Donna concludes it's Aphrodite the Greek goddess of love influencing events all along. And that this is effort.

Stephen:

That I love so much because honestly, the first thing that came to my mind was, Hey, now this is something for the website. Come visit. Aphrodite's fountain. Like that's going to drawing customers.

Steve:

It's certainly, well, Aphrodite's

Ronnie:

fountain more like serious dues.

Steve:

No, no, no, no,

Ronnie:

not happiness.

Steve:

No, no. The,

Stephen:

no. Now do you believe that it was Aphrodite and fate guiding things all along?

Steve:

I mean, I don't know whether it was Aphrodite herself or, but I do believe it was fate. That kind of everything happened the way that it was meant to happen. Like everyone has a happy ending with the way it was meant to happen. Right? Like that, not everything is always clean that sometimes things can be messy, but they all work out in the end. Too

Ronnie:

true to my boy. Not just made it.

Steve:

Yes. Now the closing scene of the film shows Sophie and sky sailing to the horizon to begin their life together, leaving salmon, Donna to live happily ever after on the island with the, I have a dream reprise. Yup.

Stephen:

And I have seen the sequel. So does everyone live happily ever after no. Meryl Streep dies? Oh no. Yeah. And before in between the two movies and they never actually say what Donna dies of my guess is that it was probably a heart-related issues because they don't talk about her being sick or anything like that. But yeah, she is dead in the movie that she died happy. Sam was living on the island with her. They had been halfway through the renovations to get it open, to be a real honest to goodness. Vacation destination. So I'm going to say she died happy. Yeah. And so it was it the movie still and spoiler alert, Meryl Streep does make an appearance in the sequel, even though she's dead

Steve:

as a ghost. Yeah. Actually now after the closing scene, Don and the dynamos performed dancing queen over the credits and then the entire cast sings Waterloo. Finally, Sophie sings. Thank you for the music as the ending credits roll. I love the Waterloo park. Yes, me too. That was my favorite of the three.

Stephen:

Yeah. The Waterloo, because they all come out in Abba outfits and like, that's one of the things, especially when they're just about to finish the song that you can tell they're having so much fun. And at the end of Waterloo it shows the green chorus up in the sky on a cloud as if they were the Greek. God. Watching them all. Yes,

Ronnie:

Steve to, did you see the cul not Steven. Steve? Did you see this? Okay. Okay. I, I was half in the bag and singing with an angel at that moment, so I really cannot account for anything other than I remember sheriffs face, but I'll have to rewatch that one.

Stephen:

I really just want to make sure

Ronnie:

I wasn't the only person you hadn't

Stephen:

seen. Cause I will watch

Ronnie:

it. I will watch it. Of course, of course.

Stephen:

Yeah. I went by, by myself to the theater to see it. I

Steve:

think I was busy that

Stephen:

day. You were home that night. That's for sure.

Steve:

Anyway, what was your favorite part of the movie? Steven?

Stephen:

So my favorite part of this, Phil, there are so many, but it's the dancing queen sequence like that to me, like Abba is joy to me and the dancing queen sequence, especially getting down to the dock and. That's joy. And like, I could watch that part again and again, because it just makes me so happy. Yeah, that was

Steve:

good. I also really liked the Boulay VU with the dance sequence and the energy rising. That's

Stephen:

my favorite of the dance sequences for sure. And

Steve:

Ronnie, what was your favorite part?

Ronnie:

So I'm actually going to rest on this one because you both named my two favorite parts. That what you both said, those are my favorite part of the Boulay booed, the dancing green. I love the dancing. I loved the verbals. I was happy, but if I would just slip to put a cherry on top Christine Baranski at the beach now, you know, I could never say never to that, but these are my two favorite parts. I love it. Absolutely beautiful. And I love Abba. I think, I mean, I didn't know how a person couldn't love AMBA. You're just going to sit there and smile. What's so wrong with

Stephen:

that. Yeah, exactly. That. And you're 100%. On that, because it is Abbott is fun miles

Ronnie:

anymore. Listen to this, you'll smile and you'll be happy for 15 minutes of nothing else. Do it, do it,

Stephen:

just skip over the parts where Pierce Brosnan, singing waiter when they're

Steve:

hearing you that. Yes. You know what? I love more than Abba our

Stephen:

listeners.

Steve:

Yes. And I would love to hear what they think of this episode. They can get in touch with us by emailing us@happylifepodatgmail.com

Stephen:

or they can find us on all the socials, whether that is Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or tech talk at happy life pod. And until

Steve:

next time

Ronnie:

or just drunk down me and we'll make some funny Colts at the Steve's together just to mess them up.

Steve:

All right,

Stephen:

Tom, everybody stay happy.
